Vitamins to Prepare for Pregnancy

If you read about my New Year Resolutions, you know that I have some pretty exciting things to look forward to this year. I would like to reach my goal weight so we can begin trying to conceive. I am really looking forward to getting healthy this year, not only for myself, but for my future baby.

It is my hope to become healthier this year and prepare my body for a pregnancy. Losing weight is going to be a big step, but there are some other things I need to do, as well. Taking vitamins, for example, is another routine I would like to maintain this year.

I began taking prenatal vitamins shortly after my miscarriage in November, 2012. We weren’t planning on getting pregnant, so I hadn’t been taking them previously. Now that I know we are able to conceive, taking vitamins is a simple thing I can do each day to prepare my body for a healthy pregnancy when we are ready.

Right now, I am taking two different prenatal vitamins (one is a prenatal multivitamin), Vitamin D and Folic Acid. I am taking Vitamin D not only for my pregnancy, but for my MS, too. I am always dangerously deficient in Vitamin D when I am checked, so I have begun taking a supplement which will hopefully help correct that issue.

I haven’t fully taken the time to research which vitamins should be taken to prepare for pregnancy, but I have been taking what I believe are to be the basics. I heard from my nutritionist friend that folic acid is very important to take before you try to conceive. I plan on doing a full investigation on what type of vitamins and dosage I should be taking myself, soon.

Planning to get pregnant or not; do you take vitamins?

  1. SO exciting! The only tip I can give you is sometimes prenatal vitamins can make you sick.... so if you start feeling sick all the time switch up the type you are taking. Here's to 2013!!! :)

  2. I've been trying to get in the vitamin taking habit since November for this reason too, but not taking actual prenatal ones yet, just regular multivitamins and folic acid (I was told to take that too, even though I wasn't close to trying yet). Looking forward to hearing what you find out on your investigation!

  3. I asked my doctor about vitamins, and he said the only thing that really matters is Folic acid. But pre-natals you can take anytime! Baby dust to you :)
