Piper Grace: Twelve Months

As I sit here, getting ready to write Piper's one year update, I can't help but become a little emotional.

When I think back on the day when Piper was born, I thank God for the doctors and nurses who saved her life and helped bring our joy into the world. After 9 hours of labor, unexpectedly, Piper's heart began to fade away. Hearing her heartbeat fade on the monitors and being rushed by medical staff was the scariest moment of my life, but, the most amazing, most raw and most happy moments of my life soon followed.

Our little miracle, Piper Grace, was born via emergency c-section at 6:30 p.m. on January 21, 2015. {You can read her full birth story, here: Piper's Birth Story.} I praise God every day for our baby girl, and on her birthday especially. Our baby is healthy, she is here and she has been here for a year. We are so blessed.

We celebrated Piper's birthday this past Saturday. A full recap of the celebration deserves a post all on it's own. I will share that with you all, soon.

At 12 months old, Piper's personality is unmistakable. She is wild; she is daring; she is independent; she is funny; she is sweet; she is a foodie; she is an animal-lover; she is Piper Grace.

This year has been the best year of our life. While Nick and I are both a little sad that Piper is growing up so fast, we are also excited to continue living out the best years of our life with our little girl. We are so looking forward to this next year with our girl, especially. These are truly the days of our life and we are cherishing them just as so.

Piper Grace has been sleeping well in her nursery (when she isn't teething). I just put my finger in her mouth yesterday to find that she actually has TEN teeth in there. Last I checked she only had eight teeth but now it feels like she cut her first molars and she's got two more on their way. My girl is a teething champion! I think we are all looking forward to getting some more sleep once Piper's mouth stops hurting so much.

Piper is saying words left and right. I don't think I could even list all the words she can say but I'll try. She is really good at mimicking us. She can say "mama", "dada", "light", "hi", "hey", "nom nom", "more", a few different animal sounds and my husband and I both swear she copied me the other day and said "destruction" only it was more like "de - du - chon". We laughed so hard! This girl loves destruction. If you've got a block tower built, be prepared for it to be knocked down if she's in the room. No block tower left standing!

Piper is eating just about everything now with the exception of some fruits. She has always loved vegetables! Nick says that she is a savory food lover. Piper loves meats and veggies and breads of all sorts.

We are starting to wean Piper onto milk tomorrow (wish us luck)! My mama heart is a little sad about the milk weaning but I think that she is more than ready for this next step. I just fear that once she's onto milk, my days of holding her and feeding her a bottle will be coming to an end. I so love our time together with her in my arms. She's been able to feed herself a bottle for quite some time but she still lets me hold her while she drinks it. She even lets me feed the bottle to her most feedings. I love it!

Piper took her first steps the night before she turned one year old! It was more of a step-step-step dive. She walks all along everything she can these days. She holds onto my finger with one hand and will walk me all around the house. She isn't completely independent when walking (which I'm happy about) but she's starting to venture out a bit. She likes to scare mommy and stand on her own for a few seconds before falling down on her butt. She thinks it's funny. Our days are numbered.

Piper's got all the tricks down. She's been playing peek-a-boo, waving, blowing kisses, clapping, showing us how big she is, telling us what different animals say and she points at her crib when she wants to go to sleep. She's a smart little girl!

Piper Grace. I don't know what I did without you in my life. I don't know what I'd do without you now. You are my favorite part of me. You make me want to be a better person, you make me want to better this world. You show me every day the meaning of true joy, true laughter and true love.
I love you more than you will ever know.

"Baby mine, don't you cry
Baby mine, dry your eyes
Rest your head close to my heart
Never to part, baby of mine

Little one when you play
Don't you mind what they say
Let those eyes sparkle and shine
Never a tear, baby of mine

If they knew sweet little you
They'd end up loving you too
All those same people who scold you
What they'd give just for

The right to hold you
From your head to your toes
You're so sweet, goodness knows
You are so precious to me
Sweet as can be, baby of mine."

  1. My husband put our son's newborn pictures in a slideshow to this song and we watched it a few days after he was born (he just turned 1 last week), and we both bawled our eyes out
