How Milestone Rewards Increase Your Success

The other day, my husband asked me, "what are you going to do with your winnings from the Jackpot Challenge?". To be honest, I was a little taken back and didn't have an answer for him.

I hadn't even thought about the reward yet but,  I'm so glad he asked me when he did. Taking time to identify the reward for reaching your goal is such an important step in the process of success. It's an added boost of motivation, too! The more you think about the reward, the more you're going to think about doing all the things necessary to get there!

Prior to becoming pregnant with Piper in 2014, as I was in the process of losing a total of 40 pounds, one of the ways I kept myself motivated was by rewarding myself for every 5 pounds lost. The rewards I earned ranged anywhere from a new piece of jewelry to a new outfit or a new book. You can see all of the rewards I earned from 2011 - 2013, here: Weight Loss Rewards.

If you'll notice, none of my rewards were food-related. I don't like to use food as a reward because in doing so, it can foster an unhealthy relationship with food. No food is necessarily off-limits for me in which I'd need to reward myself with, anyway. I don't do deprivation of anything. I plan to lose the weight as I had before having Piper; by eating everything in moderation (along with drinking all my water, exercising, eating the healthy stuff more often than the not-so-healthy stuff, etc.). It's called living a healthy lifestyle, and I'm working on getting back to it.

Some people I know like to reward themselves only when the ultimate goal has been reached. I, however, like to give myself milestone rewards {like for every 5 pounds lost}. This keeps things fresh for me.

My Next 3 Milestone Rewards:

{245 lbs.} 5 pounds lost - Treat Myself to a Work-Week Nap

My daughter, Piper, is almost two, and she takes an afternoon nap lasting anywhere from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Some days her nap lasts an hour and about once or twice a week, she'll surprise me and nap almost 3 hours long! During her nap, I usually get housework done, or I'll work on filling Etsy orders. Very rarely do I use Piper's nap, to nap myself, so; this is a nice reward I look forward to giving myself!

{240 lbs.} 10 pounds lost - Salon Appointment
When I reach 10 pounds lost, I will treat myself to a hair cut. I would love some more layers, and just a little trim. This will be a great reward for me because I rarely treat myself to a salon appointment; I usually go once a year, around my birthday.

{235 lbs.} 15 pounds lost - Spa Manicure/Pedicure
When I reach a total of 15 pounds lost, I will have reached my HealthyWage 6% body-weight-loss goal! I am going to celebrate by treating myself to a spa pedicure and/or manicure at my favorite spa! I also don't do this very often, usually once or twice a year. This will be a great reward for all of my hard work!

As you'll see above, milestone rewards don't necessarily need to cost money. However, I have noticed that the rewards that do have a cost-incentive end up being some of my biggest motivators. I don't like to spend money on myself too often, so when I do have a reason to do it; it is definitely a treat!

Along with cost-incentive rewards, I am learning the incentive in betting on yourself is just as great. Now that I'm hosting this HealthyWage Jackpot Challenge {where I am betting $20/month that I will lose 6% of my body weight in 12 weeks} I haven't felt this motivated to lose weight since before I got pregnant with Piper!

If you're ready to add a cost incentive to losing weight, there is still time to join us! Read more, here: Goal of Losing's HealthyWage Jackpot Challenge.
