Not a Fan of All or Nothing

If you've been a reader of this blog for some time, then you know that I am not a fan of diets.

Diets and deprivation go hand in hand. If you are "dieting", you are depriving yourself of something. Sure, it might be a good idea to limit some "bad" foods, but not deprive yourself of them "for good". In my journey of losing weight, I made it a point to make no food "off limits". I haven't been successful in losing 40 pounds and keeping it off for a couple years* by depriving myself of a certain type of food. I just eat more of the good stuff, and let myself indulge every once in a while. There's a balance I have maintained to lose the weight and keep it off.

The way that I lost the weight was pretty simple:

1. I have been eating healthy foods, most of the time.

2. I have been exercising, a few times a week.

3. I have been drinking enough water, almost daily.

4. I was getting enough sleep, most of the time (and I'm missing those days now that I have a 3 month old).

My sleepy girl, Piper.

Now when I say that it was simple, please don't misunderstand. It wasn't easy. The logic of it, however, isn't hard to follow. Eat well, exercise, drink water, get enough sleep; those are great ingredients for success.

If you notice above, I didn't say "always" after any of the 4 different things that helped me lose 40 pounds. This brings me to another point I need to share with you.

Dieting encourages the all or nothing mentality. I'm not a fan of that. I give my best, most of the time, and I give myself a break when I need it.

These past few months, I have been giving myself some additional grace because of all the recent changes in my life. I need to really be okay with that, too. Sometimes I struggle. You didn't hear too much from me this past week, and that was partially due to the struggle. I want to jump right back to where I was before I was pregnant with Piper, but the thing is, it is going to take time and it's not going to be all at once. In May, though, I am going to give it my best shot.

I have joined my best friend's challenge group for May. She is a nutritionist and she has invited a group of people to join her in living healthier this month. She is sharing goals for us to join in on, if we wish, and I also have some personal goals of my own.

This month, I am going to try to get back to the routine of eating healthy foods, most of the time, and exercising a few times a week. I am already doing well with drinking enough water and sleep is just going to be as much as I can get my hands on these days.

As I join in on challenge goals from Mindy's May Challenge, I will let you know about them and will share my progress with you all.

May is going to be a great month. Let's live it as healthy as we can!

*aside from that time when I was pregnant.
