Dealing with Bronchitis While Pregnant

Talk about speaking too soon.

In my last post, about 4 days ago, I was telling you how I was feeling much better after having a sore throat. Well, at about midnight on Friday, I woke up with the worst burning feeling in my trachea and bronchial tubes, every time I took a breath. (I didn't come up with that lingo all on my own, the doctor told me so.)

I was extremely worried for my baby because I was having so much trouble breathing. It hurt so bad, and my anxiety wasn't helping any. I tried to breath in the steam from a hot shower, and that helped momentarily. However, once I left the bathroom, the breathing was bad again, and my anxiety was through the roof. I got myself so anxious that I threw up. I was so worried about being sick while pregnant, and I was so worried about my baby not getting enough oxygen, that I called the hospital to see if I should come in. The nurse said to come in immediately. Moments later, a tired husband and I left our house at about 2:30 a.m., worried out of our minds. Or maybe that was just me. Did I mention that I worry a lot about keeping my baby safe in there?

When we got to the emergency room, we were happy to see that they weren't busy. We got in to a room very quickly. After answering a lot of questions, it didn't take the doctor long to figure out that I had acute viral bronchitis. He wanted to give me a steroid shot to help me breath, but agreed that it wouldn't be a good idea since it is a class C drug for pregnancy. Instead, he gave me IV fluids and humidified air with oxygen. That really helped me calm down and breath a little easier.

The doctor was really concerned with my heart rate exceeding 120 beats per minute, so I had to be monitored a little longer and try to relax. Anxiety + Bronchitis + Pregnancy is not a great mix, just in case you're thinking about trying it all out together. Just don't.

The ER doctor was really great. He understood that I didn't want to take any medication, unnecessarily. Also, he was willing to forgo a chest x-ray because I just wasn't comfortable with the risk of harming the baby. He didn't want to do anything that would make me more anxious and make my heart rate any faster, so he did a great job at keeping me calm and understanding my wishes.

One of my couch buddies while I've been sick.

Fast forward to today. I am doing better. It doesn't hurt to breath, and my cough isn't as painful, either. The past few days were spent on the couch, or in bed. (I made sure to stay propped up in a 45 degree angle when resting and sleeping. This helped my breathing immensely.) We have been using a Vicks steam humidifier since before going to the hospital. That thing has been by my side every moment of every day of this illness. The only occasions that I would get up from the couch or bed were to take a steamy shower to help me cough, to re-hydrate (I have been drinking about 120 ounces of water a day) or to go to the bathroom. My husband fed me and took great care of everything else along the way.

My friend that is also a nurse gave me some good advice today. She said that I should try to walk around a bit and breath deeply to avoid infection in my lungs. So, I am going to go outside and let the dogs out. It sounds so simple but it is a big step for me. After all, I just spent well over 72 hours in a resting state.

While I am still worried about the possibilities of infection, pneumonia, etc. I am trying to stay positive. I feel like there is always something I could worry about so I am trying to focus of the bright side of things. For instance, I am still feeling my baby girl kick me (mostly in the bladder) and it makes me so happy to feel her active and moving around in there! I hope she's been oblivious to all the pain and struggle I've been dealing with this bronchitis.

23 Weeks Pregnant and Sick

Well, it happened. I got sick. It started with a scratchy throat at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, and ended with a sore throat, body aches and a lot of nose blowing come Wednesday.

Being sick while pregnant was one of my fears when starting this new journey. I hope this is the only time I'm sick while pregnant because on top of feeling horrible, I worry constantly if my baby is okay throughout the illness.

I watched my temperature all day yesterday and it didn't get any higher than 100 degrees. If it hit 101, I was going to call the doctor. I did call the nurse earlier yesterday, just to see what medications they would allow me to take. They said I could take robitussin or sudafed. Neither of which I am willing to take, because I am too paranoid about medication harming my baby. It's good to know, though, that the medication is doctor approved should I get ill enough to need it. How ill is too ill in my book? I don't know, but I wasn't there yesterday.

I am feeling better today. I didn't use any medication to get better, and for that I am glad. I just used vitamin C, a lot of rest and a bunch of fluids. I'm talking 120 ounces of water, 4 cups of tea with honey, and two gatorades. Needless to say, with the amount of fluids I was drinking, and the amount of sneezing and coughing I was doing, I have learned that even though you may not feel like you need to pee, it's bound to happen with a baby laying on your bladder in that situation. Change of pants required, twice. Oh the joys of pregnancy.

When I say that I rested to get better, I mean I was couch and bed bound for 36 hours straight with the exception of going to the bathroom, a quick hot shower, and to get food and fluid refills. I was not messing around.

I'm still not 100% today, but I am at about 80%. My body aches, my sinuses are sore / a little congested, and I'm just plain tired. I'm back to work and keeping up with the fluids and vitamins. Having a desk job kind of takes care of the "resting" for the most part, too.

I had a break from my job today to go to an OB appointment. We got to see our baby, again! That made my worries melt away, as it always does. I saw her flapping her hands and her jaw. She looked like she was talking. Nick said that it looked like she was blowing bubbles. He calls her a little jitter bug. She is always bouncing around, or waving her hands and feet.

23 weeks

Today, her foot was covering her face. She is so funny! She already has me laughing. The only reason for today's ultrasound was to check to see if she had any issues with her lips and nose. So of course she covered that area with her foot. Eventually, we were able to see what we needed to and all is perfectly fine! My favorite part was watching her move around in there. She seems happy and comfortable for now! Still a lot of room in there for her.

Niagara Falls Babymoon and Anniversary

Since God is so good at planning miracles (such as the little girl in my belly) we were able to combine our 5 year wedding anniversary and babymoon to make one amazing trip this weekend!

We left on Saturday morning and enjoyed a scenic three hour drive to Niagara Falls.

It may be a little pathetic, but one of my favorite things about this weekend was that we had no phone access while we were in Canada. I didn't really want to go through the trouble of getting an international plan for one night, so we just turned our phones off, instead! It was blissful to be unreachable, I've got to tell you.

View from our room!

We had a beautiful falls-view hotel room with a whirlpool. The two person whirlpool was complete heaven after a long day of walking around the falls! We floated around in there for about an hour. I think we may need to get one of those for home.

We took the self guided "behind the falls" tour that day. It was really neat (and wet)!

The weather couldn't have been better for us this weekend. 77 degrees and sunny. We really didn't mind getting all that wet during the tour. It felt good!

After the tour, we went to dinner at the falls-view restaurant. I had a 4 cheese and proscuitto stuffed chicken cordon bleu and Nick had rack of lamb. Both entrees were out of this world amazing. I am drooling just thinking about it.

Once we finished dinner, we went for an evening stroll. The falls were lit up and the weather was nice with a warm breeze. We explored the town a bit, listening to live bands as we passed different bars. It was a really relaxing evening!

This trip, while short, was extra special. Knowing this was our last getaway before our baby arrives, and even having her there with us during it, created a feeling and closeness that I never want to forget!

Mini Turkey Meatloaf

I finally did it. Tonight I made turkey meatloaf for the first time. And let me tell you, it was amazing! I don't think I'll ever go back to ground beef meatloaf. Okay, maybe one day; but not for a while!

I made two mini meatloaf's with this recipe because my husband is back to night class two nights per week, and these will make good leftovers for him to take for dinner.

A Couple Pregnancy Photos

At almost 23 weeks, I am in the honeymoon phase of pregnancy, and I am soaking up every minute of it!

22 weeks, 4 days

My favorite thing about the second trimester (aside from increased energy and less nausea) is feeling my baby kick and move around. It's such a personal, breathtaking experience (literally, at times).

We have the nursery painted and I am completely in love with it! I know my husband loves it, too. My heart skips a beat every time I catch him walking into the nursery, just to look around. I like to stand by the door and watch him daydream in there. He has a lot of plans for this baby girl's future room, and it makes me so happy to see him so happy. I love watching him turn into a father!

My husband and I plan on registering for our baby next Saturday. It's something that I've been looking forward to, and yet it's something that I've been putting off. It's a little overwhelming because I want to register for what would be best for our baby, and it's hard to know that without having her here. So, our plan is to just reserve the entire weekend for registering! We have three baby showers coming up in the next couple of months so our list will have to be long enough to accommodate that. We want to take our time, and just do our best. Oh, and we're going to make sure we have fun while we're at it!

I really love this little girl that's moving all around inside of me and, I can't wait to meet her!

Our Fifth Wedding Anniversary

Today, my husband and I celebrate five wonderful years of marriage!

Each year it gets harder to express the love in my heart for my husband. I don't even know if there are words to express the depths of our love.

Each year of our marriage has been special and easy to be considered the "best year, yet". I have just come to realize that even though I believe this past year has been our best year yet, I know that the best is yet to come and that fact blows my mind.

We are so blessed to have found one another! When life gets hard, my husband, and our love, is the one thing I can rest assured on, and count on.

I cherish our past, and I look forward to our future.

My husband is becoming a father and I'm becoming a mother; our love is growing in more ways than we ever knew possible and, we're already in awe of the beauty of this kind of love.

Feeling Like Me

First of all, I'm going to share a photo that just makes my heart melt.

Yes. That is a picture of baby twins, holding hands. How precious, right?! I got to hold the baby girl on Saturday at my diaper party. This pictures makes me want to snuggle them both up at once. I just can't stand how cute they are!

On Monday and Tuesday this week, I have laced up my sneakers for a walk during my lunch time at work. I went for a 25 minute walk each day. This is a big difference from weeks prior when I was using my lunch time to sleep. The weather has been nice and I'm trying to soak up every bit of it while I still can!

I also made an old smoothie recipe for breakfast this week! You can find the recipe for my Green Love PB Banana Smoothie, here. Between walking more and making an effort to eat healthier this week, I have been feeling a lot like my old self. That, is, with the addition of my precious baby bouncing on my bladder!

Diaper Party Pictures

We had our diaper party on Saturday! Below are some pictures from the fun-filled evening:

See that little girl peaking over at me? She's the one that I got to hold during the party. She was so adorable and it still makes me smile thinking about her cute little face!

It's times like this that remind us how much we are loved by our family and friends. We are so blessed and couldn't feel more loved! Thanks again to everyone that came and supported us! We will always remember!

Lazy Sunday Morning

I was able to hold a total of 3 babies this weekend. My heart is so happy! Since being pregnant, I have found myself close to asking complete strangers if I could hold their baby. Thankfully, we do know some people that let me hold their babies, and it definitely helped ease my baby fever for a little while. Strangers with newborns, be glad.

Fair week is over and it definitely tested my immune system. The changing weather has me feeling really worn down. I almost feel the way I feel before I get sick. Thankfully, I'm not sick. I've just been feeling this way since about Wednesday. I'm making sure to take my vitamins, including the Vitamin C. So far, I believe it's been helping! I know there are some medications I could probably take while being pregnant but I really don't even want to go there. If I do end up getting fully sick, I am going to do my best to get by with vitamins, fluids and rest.

Despite how much I loved fair week and all of the yummy food that comes with it, I am really glad to get back to eating some homemade, healthier food. The days of eating two pepperoni balls and a peanut butter milkshake for dinner are gone, and I'm not too upset about it either. I'm ready to get back to the norm. Especially now that the weather is colder; I'm thinking our new norm is going to include a lot of homemade soups!

Last night was our diaper party at my in-laws house. It was so special and I can't wait to share more about that with you all, tomorrow! For now, I'm going to heat up some green tea with honey and sit on the couch with my pups with the fire going. It's a lazy Sunday morning and I'm going to enjoy it!

What are your plans for today?

This is Getting Seriously Real

Yesterday, my husband and I came home to a big package on our porch from Amber and Chris, our friends that currently live out of town! My husband waited for me to get home, that way we could open it together. We were so surprised and felt so loved when we opened the box to find this:

We have diapers! This is getting seriously real, people.

My friends, Amber and Chris, have a cute little boy of  their own, so they are totally on top of what I need in the moment. Amber is like 10 steps ahead of me by sending us a copy of "What to Expect the First Year". Somewhere in the back of my crazy soon-to-be-mommy-mind, I was thinking that I should get a copy of that book before the baby comes. Now that's just one more thing I can cross off that list that exists somewhere in the depths of my mind.

I thought it was super special that they also included a little "Baby's First Year" book for "Daddy", too. So much of these parties honor the mother, but let's face it, daddy is doing and will be doing a lot, too. Especially in my case. I don't even know what corner I'd be spending my some of my days in without Nick to help me out throughout this journey. He's pretty awesome, too.

This weekend is going to be filled with a lot of fun, love and happiness. Our diaper party is tomorrow evening at my mother-in-laws house! My friend, Mindy, and her are so sweet for hosting. We can't wait to see what they have planned!

Pizza Slice As Big As Your Head

Be prepared to hear a lot about our local fair and my love for fair food this week.

Last night, I picked my little brother up from preschool and took him to the fair for Ride-A-Rama. He was so excited! It was so, so cute to watch him run from ride to ride! I am looking forward to the day when he rides those rides with our baby girl in about 4 or 5 years. Notice, now, I'm not saying "I can't wait" because I am not rushing a moment of these days!

After a little while, my mom and step-dad joined us at the fair. My husband was at night class, so it was nice they could join me. They bought me dinner, too! My choice for the first night of the fair was a slice of pizza the size of my head. I didn't get the red sauce because red sauce + pregnancy = heartburn for me. That's okay though, because I actually love the loaded vegetable pizza!

Evan got a big slice of pizza, too. He almost ate just about as much of it as I did!

Since my husband has begun night classes again on Mondays and Tuesdays, tonight, my husband is able to join me at the fair. We already know what we're getting for dinner, too! Our favorite, a Gyro with cucumber sauce. Yum!

Since my food is a little out of whack this week, due to the fair, let me tell you that I'm making up for it with all of the walking I'm doing. This is one tired momma at the end of the day. My feet have been taking a beating! My husband is so sweet, though. As soon as he walked in the door last night from working all day and his night class, he sat down with me on the couch and rubbed my feet. He makes my heart smile. I just love that guy!

Fair Time

One of our favorite weeks of the year has finally arrived! Fair week!

I have to be honest, being pregnant during the fair is probably going to be just as dangerous as it is satisfying. (Speaking about the food, of course!) However, a couple years ago, I came to terms with the fact that fair week is a week to splurge. It only comes one week a year, after all!

We didn't even grocery shop for dinners this week because we are planning on eating dinner at the fair. We are going to pick something different to eat for dinner each night. Or at least I'm going to try. I am really hooked on the Gyros at the fair. I could probably just eat a Gyro for dinner each night and be happy! They are just so good and it's not something to be guilty about eating, either!

The fair didn't officially start until today, but last night my mom and I walked around the grounds to look at the tractors with my little brother (and his TSS). It was a good way to get him ready for opening day of the fair!

I spy a baby bump!

Evan loves to sit on the tractors. I think that he believes it's almost more fun than the real rides! We'll see what he thinks after tonight. Since my husband is at night class, I am going to take my Evan to Ride a Rama at the fair. I'll only be alone with him for an hour before my parents get there (but still wish me luck)! Now that I'm pregnant, I am getting a little less confident in my running skills and I'm slightly worried about the fact that I can't pick him up. Hopefully I won't need to do either one and all will be well!

Did you go to a fair this year?
What's your favorite fair food?

Homemade Chicken and Gravy

Since I'm about to be a parent, I think it's finally time that I start learning how to cook some of those homemade meals that I loved so much as a kid, but haven't tried to make yet as an adult. First being, roasted chicken with potatoes and gravy.

After successfully making this chicken (by borrowing my mom's chicken roasting pan thing and following the directions on the chicken package) I feel a lot more ready to parent our child.

My husband is totally ready to be a dad, too. Do you know how I know? Well, it's because he was able to make chicken gravy from scratch. That's the true test. If you can make chicken gravy from scratch, then you're going to be a good dad. It's just science!

PS: he also knew how to carve the chicken, so that's earns him some extra dad skills, as well!

A homemade meal on a Sunday night. It just doesn't get much better than that! Unless you have leftovers...

And I do!

What's your favorite homecooked meal?
Do you like gravy? I have to be honest, I didn't like the stuff until I turned 25.

The Gender Reveal

We're so happy to finally share with you the gender of our baby, coming January, 2015!

video

We had a Gender Reveal party this weekend, revealing the gender to our parents, siblings and grandparents! It went really well; our house was brimming with love and happiness!

This is such a special time in our lives and while I can't wait to meet our baby girl in January, we are having fun cherishing every moment (and every kick) in the meantime!
