Family Staycation Week Has Begun

Earlier in the year, my husband and I looked for the perfect time this summer for him to take off a week from work so we could have a little family staycation. With Piper starting her six-week summer program at the school next week, we figured this week beforehand would be the best week for our family staycation!

We don't have any real plans but we do have a list of activities we could pick from each day! The list includes things like zoo visits, trips to an amusement park, beach days, camp fire nights, etc. When my husband got home from work on Friday, our staycation officially began! 

On Saturday, we went to Dunkin Donuts for breakfast and then visited the zoo for a few hours. It was a really great zoo trip for us all! Delaney got to ride the train at the zoo for the first time and she was really interested in everything about it! 

Later than evening, Piper went with her Nina while Nick and I took Laney to Walmart to pick up some things we'd need for staycation week. It was a really nice, laid back way to end the day.

Yesterday, the girls and I attended a bridal shower and then we visited my moms house where we swam in her pool!

Today is Monday and I'm about to leave for a solo grocery shopping trip! For any of you moms out there, you know this is going to be a very exciting morning for me :)

This afternoon, we're planning on visiting an amusement park! It's going to be a fun way to kick off the week! Come back on Wednesday for another update. See you then!

Delaney Jane: Six Months

Delaney is 6 months old and she sure is acting like it! This is such a fun age. She is rolling all over this house, starting to eat solids, and is learning new things almost every day!

Laney started sitting up on her own this past month and eating real food. Her first food was carrots, followed by avocadoes, sweet potatoes and green beans. We're coming to find she prefers avocadoes and green beans over the rest but she doesn't mind sweet potatoes every now and then. She is definitely not a foodie on the same level as her sister was at this stage but, I'm sure she'll find her love for food as we explore more foods this next month!

Delaney had a big move this past month from sleeping in our room to sleeping in her own nursery! She dropped her swaddle and traded it in for her bunny lovies that we call "lambies" because Piper had "lambies" and we can't seem to shake the nickname.

Despite all of the blowing raspberries, sucking on fingers and drooling, Delaney doesn't have any teeth, yet! She hasn't officially said her first word yet but sometimes she will repeat the sounds and looks we make.

This first half of her first year was so filled with gratitude and love! We strive to savor all of these moments with Delaney and Piper exactly as they are in their respective stages. It's so sweet to have a 6 month old and a 6 year old. We feel so incredibly blessed every day! I still can't believe this blessing we have in our girls!

Taking Steps in the Right Direction

Hey, everyone! It's Monday and I am feeling motivated to make healthy choices! My motivation and will power have been struggling to get on the same page lately but, I am never going to give up on myself. I try to aim for an 80/20 balance when it comes to making healthy decisions with food. Personally, the worst thing I can do is move forward with an all-or-nothing mentality. That is a restriction-based mentality that always leads me down a bad path.

Today is all about identifying the things I'm doing to point me in the right direction for creating a healthier lifestyle. Let's start here: my fridge is full of healthy ingredients for the week. I feel like that's a good step in the right direction!

As soon as I woke up this morning, I began drinking my water. It's 10am now and I just finished 40 oz. That's another good step in the right direction!

I made myself a list of things to accomplish for the day and I am working on slowly checking them off, one by one. Delaney (my 6 month old) is down for a nap right now. Typing out this blog post during her nap is another thing I'll be checking off my list for today! I think it's another good step in the right direction, too.

Are there things that you've done to prep for this week that are leading you to take steps in the right direction? I'm sure you could think of at least one thing and if not, it's not too late to do something that will help you take that step!

The reason I wanted to point out the things I'm doing to take steps in the right direction is because I'm working on setting a positive mindset and outlook for the week! I've been on a rollercoaster with moments where I'm doing really well with my food choices and then other moments where I'm not doing well at all! These past few weeks have definitely been leading me outside of the 80/20 balance that I strive to maintain. It's been more like 50/50. That's not necessarily bad - 50/50 seems to help me maintain my weight but my goal is to lose weight to gain better health and so, that is what I'm working toward this week!

Goodbye Sparkpeople...

Happy Friday, everyone! Thanks for stopping by today! I am feeling a little nostalgic this morning. I recently found out the platform I've been using to help with my weight-loss for nearly 12 years is closing down in August. 

Sparkpeople is the platform I've been using for over a decade to help me keep track of my nutrition. The Sparkpeople platform was also the place where I discovered my love for blogging! 

My SparkPage is like a time capsule! I just went down memory lane and started reading old blogs of mine from 2009-2014. It's kind of funny to look back on those posts. I was in my early 20's, with so much to learn! I learned a lot through Sparkpeople and that community. I haven't read into Sparkpeople's statement enough to know if my personal page will go away with the platform. I'll have to go through and snag some of the old pictures from the posts just in case!

Curious - is anyone here from the old Sparkpeople days? 
Also, what platform do you use to track your nutrition?

As for tracking my nutrition, I have been doing an okay job but not great by any means! I have only had a few days of sticking within my nutritional ranges this week. I am hoping a good grocery restock this weekend will help to get me back on track!

Six Months Postpartum Update

Hey, everyone! If you’re new here, this blog post is a decent place to start! I’m Kalyn, wife and mother of two beautiful girls (Piper: 6 years and Delaney: 6 months). I am currently 6 months postpartum and I wanted to share a little update about how I'm doing lately.

6 months postpartum. Wow. That happened really fast! Here's an overview of how I'm doing lately.

C-Section Healing:

My csection scar is barely noticeable at this point and as far as mobility goes, I am feeling even better at this stage than the first time around with my daughter Piper, 6 years ago. From what I remember in my drug-induced haze shortly after my c-section, the doctor said she had removed some old scar tissue adhesion from my first c-section that was pulling various muscle groups together. She said now that it was removed, I should feel much better in recovery this time around. She sure was right! I guess I didn't realize how limited my core was after my first c-section. I am feeling really great this time around! My only complaint is stiffness in my back and hips occasionally. They get really stiff after sitting for a long period of time. It's something I'm working on with my chiropractor!

Physical Activity

Physically, I'm excited to be running again! While I was 6 months postpartum with my first daughter, Piper, I wrote a post about getting back into running, here: I Feel Like Me Again. I think it's funny that I am in a similar stage and mentality with running 6 months after having my second daughter, too. Running is such a healthy outlet for me! Back then, I wrote "running hurts and running heals". I feel that so much right now!


I am seeing the same trend as I did with my first daughter as far as my weight goes. I lost all of my baby weight really fast, within two weeks after birth I was back down to my "pre-baby weight" and then, after I stopped breastfeeding (2 months postpartum this time around), my weight came back! 

The reason here is two-fold: it's hormonal and it's bad coping habits. My body is still trying to find it's new normal hormonally and, I am not helping it much by eating poorly most of the time. There are days when I do great with my nutrition, and then there are many days in a row when I order out food or have basically another meal worth of snacks way too late at night. I have been eating when I'm tired again. It's something I am trying to work on while also trying not to give myself a hard time about because this is a unique and sometimes hard season, and it doesn't last long.

My pre-pregnancy weight was around 230 lbs. My pregnancy weight was around 255 lbs. I'm currently living in the middle, around 240 lbs.

Although I am still very overweight, I am finding that I am not feeling so bad about it in this season. At 6 months postpartum, I do technically have my body back to myself but, I am still sharing it with my baby quite a bit. She loves to nestle in to my big pillowy arms, and jump up and down on my chubby belly. This body of mine is providing a special kind of comfort to my baby in these days - how could I be upset about that? One day, she won't need my big comfy arms to rest on. I feel grateful that my body is still such a comfortable place for my baby to rest and play.

Mentally + Emotionally:

While I don't think I blogged about this much, I did suffer with postpartum anxiety and depression occasionally throughout my first year postpartum, 6 years ago. This time around, I have had far less postpartum anxiety and thankfully there has been no real sign of postpartum depression, yet. With that being said, I have had some sad days, which is to be expected, especially when grieving so many different things taken away by COVID this past year. I think being more self aware and often checking in with myself and others has been helping!

Most exciting and most importantly, this time around I have been feeling less like I lost a part of myself in this postpartum stage and more like I’ve found exactly who I’m suppose to be! I am stronger in my faith this time around, which I believe definitely helps that feeling of contentment in this season of life. 

God has been and always will be so faithful and good. I am beyond grateful He has entrusted me with this calling of "mom" and for all the ways He has stretched and grown me through it.

Enjoying Our Extra Short Summer Vacation

Hello, and happy Tuesday! I've been out of my normal posting pattern of Monday/Wednesday/Friday for a while. I'm not sure exactly when I'll be going back to it with summer vacation now in full swing. There may be some hope for my blog posting pattern to return in July when Piper attends a summer program at the school for 6 weeks!

When I heard of a summer program being offered in-person at the school this summer, I enrolled Piper immediately. It sounds like the program will offer a mix of literary instruction, math instruction, art, gym and STEM activities! It's all being taught by Piper's Kindergarten teacher and another teacher in her district.

Since we did remote learning at home for Piper during this pandemic school year, the biggest benefit of this summer program for us is that it will all be done in-person at the school. Even though the summer program will be much more fun and activity-filled than a typical school day, I figured after being schooled from home for so long, this would be the perfect on-ramp for Piper going back to in-person learning for First Grade this Fall!

With all this said, I can't believe we are already midway through June! Our summer vacation is extra short with Piper's summer program coming up in 3 weeks but, we are happy the program will only be going 4 days each week, Monday-Thursday, 8:30-2:30. This new schedule starting in July will give me plenty of one-on-one time with Delaney, and will still offer plenty of time for summer fun with Piper!

Speaking of summer fun, so far our summer has been filled with so much friend and play time for the kids! I couldn't be happier to be re-engaged with family and friends after so long of needing to keep distance. The month of June is packed with back-to-back tball games and weekly visits with our life group friends.

June Goals & What I Eat in a Day

Hey, everyone! I'm not sure about you but we are already midway through week one of summer vacation over here! We plan on taking this first week nice and easy as we transition into "summer break mode". Our calendar is already pretty full between life group and back-to-back tball games each week. We also plan to sprinkle in a few Zoo trips and Waldameer trips here or there throughout the month of June! It's going to be a fun month!

This month, I am not working toward any specific weight-loss goal. With that said, I am still focusing on my daily nutrition and activity goals in effort to lose weight, I just don't have a specific number in mind. I want to see what my 6 month postartum body wants to do with the healthy choices I make this month. 

I've been sharing all of the meals and snacks I've been eating lately on my Instagram and Facebook Stories. I've been doing this for just a couple days and it's been a good source of accountability for me. I am not sure if I'll do it every day this month but, I am going to try to do it as often as I can!

As for my activity this month, I am still working along on the couch to 5k program. Honestly, the name of the program is a little deceiving as far as my goal for starting the program. I don't really have any intention of completing another 5K. I've done a couple before (this one and this one) and I don't really want to do another race as much as I just want to get more comfortable running again. I've used this program before and I know it works as far as increasing endurance and speed! If I come out of the program running for 5 minutes or more at a time and if I also shave a couple minutes off my (currently very slow) mile, I'll be happy with that!

A few other things I'm doing to live a healthier more balanced life this month includes drinking 80-120 oz/water daily; reading my new summer devotional series; taking my vitamins, and; giving myself a lot of grace along the way!

Piper Graduated {Remote} Kindergarten!

We did it! She did it! Piper graduated Kindergarten remotely from home!

This past week has been all sorts of bittersweet for me. I was so happy but also sad to hand in Piper's chromebook at the school last week. We spent the entire school year logging in for her daily Kindergarten lessons and now, we never will log in for Kindergarten again. 

For those who don't know, we had every intention of having Piper attend Kindergarten until the pandemic hit. Last summer, we made the decision to school Piper from home for what we hoped would only be this school year. We choose the remote option for the sake of consistency and safety. I was pregnant with Delaney at the beginning of the school year and gave birth right in the middle of it. We weren't going to take any chances.

I know this isn't the case for some but, Piper truly thrived in Kindergarten at home. It wasn't always easy but, it was something we're incredibly happy to have experienced with one another. This past school year is time we'll never get back. I am so glad we were able to spend it together!

Couch to 5K Program: Week 1 Day 3

It's been two weeks since I last attempted Week 1 Day 3 of the Couch to 5K program. I was mid-run when I strained a muscle in my leg, stopping me dead in my tracks. I allowed enough time for my muscle to fully heal and I'm happy to say that I finally completed Week 1 of the program last night!

I didn't actually get the chance to run until after 8pm last night. I was with both girls all day, facilitating one of the final days of remote Kindergarten for my oldest. Then, by the time my husband got home it was time to start dinner and get ready for Piper's Tball practice. We drove separate to practice so that I could take Delaney home as soon as it was over. Piper likes to play on the park with her friends after practice but Delaney is usually due for a bottle and bed by that time. 

It worked really well driving separate to practice. Nick stayed with Piper at the playground while I took care of Delaney at home. Delaney was asleep and I was ready to go for my run just as soon as Nick and Piper were pulling in the driveway. At that point I didn't have any excuse not to go running besides being tuckered out from a long day. I knew that I'd feel better running than resting, though. If you know, you know. I ran my slow and steady intervals and I loved it!

It feels good to be back! Fingers crossed I can stay injury free so I can continue on this program.
